Fast Break Coaching Expectations
- Complete coaching application and agree to a background check.
- Attend coaching clinics and player clinics as communicated by the WDPYO Board.
- Organize a parent meeting at the beginning of the season and review the player, parent, and coach expectations.
- Provide timely communication to parents regarding policies, practices, and games.
- Be organized – Come to practice prepared with a plan and delegate responsibilities to assistant coaches and parents as appropriate.
- Run similar offensive and defensive schemes as taught in the clinics/by varsity coach to ensure a smooth transition for players year to year. Use guidance from the high school staff and coach trainers to assist.
- Focus on fundamentals – Develop a strong foundation in fundamental basketball skills including dribbling, shooting, passing, footwork, rebounding, screening, and defending.
- Understand the rules – Read the rules before you begin your league and tournament games.
- Be everyone’s coach – All players deserve your coaching at practice and in games. If you coach your own child, treat them as an equal to the entire team.
- Do not coach or form any teams made up of a subset of your grade level players while the Fast Break Season is underway (start of clinic’s to end of last Fast Break funded tournament).
- Demonstrate good sportsmanship at all times. Players will learn from your example. Control your emotions and avoid actions, language, and gestures that may be interpreted as inappropriate.
- Follow the Fast Break Policy Framework in regards to playing time, roster decisions, and game scheduling.
- Be on time to oversee players before practices and games. Coaches are required to stay at the facility until all players are picked up.
- Discipline with the intent to teach your players how to conduct themselves appropriately.
- Represent WDP positively at all times by being respectful to officials, coaches, players, parents, and fans. Unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated. Coaches ejected from a game will receive disciplinary actions from the Board, including possible suspension or removal from the program.
- Be supportive to both the Fast Break and high school basketball programs and coaches.
- Be open and understanding to listening to parents’ concerns or issues after the 24 hour rule has surpassed. Respond to parents tactfully and within a reasonable amount of time.
- Assist the WDPYO in its efforts to continuously improve Fast Break by completing a year end evaluation of the program.
- Return all WDPYO equipment at the end of the season.
- Treat confidential information as CONFIDENTIAL!
